British MP George Galloway loses appeal - Canada supresses free speech

TORONTO — Supporters of controversial British MP George Galloway say he will not attempt to cross into Canada now that his request for an injunction to enter the country has been denied.

The Federal Court decision prevents Mr. Galloway from appearing in person at an event in Toronto this evening, the first of four scheduled events in Canada — but he will deliver comments by video.

The federal government has told Mr. Galloway he could not enter Canada because he allegedly engaged in terrorist activities — a claim the British MP denies.

In his decision today, Mr. Justice Luc Martineau of the Federal Court says there are “serious issues to be tried” if a judicial review of the government's position occurs.

But Judge Martineau adds he wasn't satisfied conditions were met to grant an emergency injunction to allow Mr. Galloway into Canada.
